The principles of Pilates can also be performed using large equipment such as the reformer. The reformer is a piece of resistance exercise equipment designed by Joseph Pilates. It consists of a platform that moves back and forth along a carriage. Resistance is provided by the exerciser's body weight and by springs attached to the carriage and platform. This specially designed equipment provides support whilst incorporating light spring resistance to safely sculpt, tone and stretch the muscles. Because of the support from the machine, it allows the application of basic mat principles in dynamic and challenging exercises. Workouts on the reformer can be varied from easy to difficult.
